There was yet more drama at the funeral of the late music icon Oliver Mtukudzi on Sunday yesterday after his first wife Melody Murape was not acknowledged at all.
Close family members and government officials acted like Murape had did not exist at all and only chose to acknowledge Mtukudzi’s widow, Daisy Mtukudzi (nee Mushonga).
Melody who is the mother of Sandra and Selmor is said to have separated from Tuku after the musician decided to get a second wife as she was against Polygamy.
While most people overlooked the issue, Mtukudzi’s oldest child Sandra did not take the apparent slight quietly and decided to speak out and acknowledge her mother herself.
That was the instruction, I was told point blank not to mention her name whenever I address mourners. I was told the instructions were from Mama (Daisy).
The 12-page obituary of Mtukudzi’s life also removed all mention of Melody and started in 1981 when Mtukudzi married Daisy.
I am so humbled by the love that you have shown for our father. This father is for us all. I want to share with you one thing that my father has taught me. He was a unifier who has left us united as the children, so I want to thank him for that. I thank you, I love you, my sisters.
My father has unified us as children and even some people whom we had not seen for years, I just want to thank him for that. I want to acknowledge the presence of my mother, as my father was married before to my mother, Melody Murape. It happens, it’s not a big issue .

Sandra received thunderous applause for her comments on unity. Local tabloid H-Metro discovered that the instruction to sideline Melody was allegedly given by Daisy who insisted that there should be no mention of Melody whatsoever. One of the masters of ceremony (MC) who officiated at the event told H-Metro,
