Indian Couple Name Their Newborn Twins Corona and Covid |
While the two words have becomes the bane of many people’s existence, the HindustanTimes reports that Raipur-based couple says they symbolise triumph over hardships as the twins – a boy and a girl – were born during the ongoing Coronavirus Lockdown enforced by many governments internationally.
They said the names would always remind them about the hardships they overcame amid the lockdown and the babies successful recovery at a government hospital.
The couple said they might reconsider and rename their kids later.
I was blessed with the twins – a boy and a girl – in the early hours on March 27. We have named them Covid (boy) and Corona (girl) for now,” Preeti Verma, the 27-old mother of the newborns,.
“The delivery happened after facing several difficulties and therefore, me and my husband wanted to make the day memorable.
“Indeed the virus is dangerous and life-threatening but its outbreak made people focus on sanitation, hygiene and inculcate other good habits. Thus, we thought about these names,” she said, giving reasons for their unusual decision.
She said when the hospital stuff also started referring to the babies as Corona and Covid they decided to name them after the pandemic,” she said.
The couple, originally from Uttar Pradesh, resides in a rented house in the Purani Basti area of the state capital.
On the day of her delivery, she said she felt severe pain and her husband had to hustle for an ambulance service.
No vehicle movement was allowed due to the lockdown and they were stopped several times by the police but they were let go after noticing her condition.
I was wondering what would happen in the hospital as it was midnight, but fortunately doctors and other staff were very cooperative,” she said.
“Our relatives, who wanted to reach the hospital, could not make it as bus and train services were stopped due to the lockdown,” said Verma, who already has a two-year-old daughter.
The twins were born in Dr BR Ambedkar Memorial Hospital.
Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the hospital, Shubhra Singh said, the mother and the newborns were discharged recently and they were in good health.
Verma had to get a Caesarian section done as there were complications with the natural birth process.
The twins were safely delivered and they became quite popular at the hospital.
